Beneath the quiet meadow, where flowers swayed in the wind and butterflies danced above, lived a small mole named Milo.

Milo loved tunnels.

He loved digging.

He loved making soft winding paths under the earth.

Every morning, he carefully padded through his underground home.

The walls were smooth.

The soil smelled warm.

Tiny roots stretched through the ceiling like little branches.

One morning, while digging a brand-new tunnel, Milo’s paws hit something

strange.

TAP.

It was not a rock.

It was not a root.

It was hollow

Milo blinked.

“That’s odd.”

He carefully brushed the dirt away.

Behind the soil was a hidden tunnel.

It was older than any tunnel he had ever seen.

And inside it…

tiny glowing roots stretched in every direction.

Milo stepped closer.

The roots twisted through the soil like golden threads.

Small drops of water sparkled on them.

At that moment, a tiny earthworm wiggled past.

” said the worm.

Milo jumped.

“Oh!”

The worm smiled.

“My name is Wiggly.”

“You found the root tunnel.”

Milo looked around in wonder.

“What is this place?”

Wiggly wiggled happily.

“This is where the plants drink.”

Milo tilted his head.

“Drink?”

Wiggly nodded.

“The roots pull water and nutrients from the soil.”

“They send it all the way up to the flowers and trees.”

Milo looked up.

Above his head, far above the earth, were the flowers of the meadow.

“They drink from down here?”

“Exactly,” said Wiggly.

Milo followed the roots deeper into the tunnel.

Soon he found a huge tree root as thick as his whole tunnel.

It stretched across the ground like a giant wooden road.

Tiny beetles crawled nearby.

Ants carried bits of leaves.

The soil felt rich and alive.

Milo’s eyes widened.

“There’s a whole world under the ground.”

Wiggly smiled.

“The underground world helps the world above stay alive.”

As they moved farther, Milo noticed something troubling.

One section of tunnel had collapsed.

A large rock had blocked the flow of water to one of the roots.

Wiggly looked worried

“The sunflower above might not get enough water.”

Milo looked at the rock.

Then at his strong digging paws.

“I can help.”

Carefully, Milo dug around the stone.

He pushed.

He scooped.

He tunneled.

Little by little, the water path opened again.

A tiny stream of water trickled back to the root.

Wiggly cheered.

“You saved the sunflower!”

The next morning, Milo climbed to the surface.

There, in the warm sunlight, stood the tallest sunflower in the meadow.

Its yellow petals stretched proudly toward the sky.

Milo smiled.

Now he understood.

The world above was beautiful.

But the world below helped make it possible.

From that day on, Milo proudly cared for his underground tunnels.

Because sometimes the most important work happens where no one can see it.
