Something very strange was happening in the Shimmering Reef. It started early in the morning when the sun barely peaked through the deep blue waves.

Coral woke up, yawned widely, and stretched her bright orange fins. She fluttered her tail, ready to swim toward the breakfast kelp—but instead of moving forward, she drifted rapidly backwards.

" she squeaked, spinning out of control and bumping into a large, sleepy sea cucumber. "Sorry, Mr. Squishy!

The sea cucumber just wobbled and rolled away—also completely backwards, muttering confused blurbs to himself.

Coral quickly realized she wasn't the only one having trouble. She found Clawdius sitting on his favourite flat rock, except he was facing the wrong way, clacking his claws together in absolute confusion.

" he shouted, his eyes wide. "My claws are snapping behind me!

"Something is pushing everything perfectly backwards," Coral said, trying to swim to him, but spinning slowly in a circle she didn't mean to spin.

A school of shiny silver fish zoomed past—tail-first, looking very dizzy. A jellyfish floated by completely upside down, its tentacles pointing up toward the surface, looking incredibly embarrassed.

"We need to find out what's causing this," Coral decided, pointing a fin toward the deep. "Follow me! Wait—I mean, swim the opposite of following me!

They reverse-swam together, giggling as they awkwardly wiggled their way toward the Deep Coral Caves, where the ocean's strongest currents always began.

Along the way, the backwards adventure only got sillier. They passed a grumpy hermit crab who was trying his best to walk forward into his shell, but the current kept gently blowing him out.

" the crab wailed, sitting in the sand next to his shell.

"Hang on, Mr. " Clawdius said, trying to reach for the crab to help. But the backward current made Clawdius spin like a tornado, and he accidentally did three spectacular reverse backflips in the water.

" Clawdius cheered, feeling dizzy but grinning from ear to ear. "I mean—that was terrible. Very serious and terrible.

Soon, they reached the Ticklish Tunnel. This was a long rock formation covered in wiggly, brightly colored sea anemones. The anemones were known to giggle loudly when anything brushed against them.

" Clawdius whispered nervously.

"We have to go through," Coral confirmed, doing her best to steer with her tail.

The backwards current suddenly pushed them into the tunnel. They tumbled through, bumping into every single sensitive anemone along the way. The entire tunnel erupted in high-pitched underwater giggles.

Coral couldn't help it—she giggled. Clawdius giggled. Even a very serious-looking moray eel hiding in the corner let out a tiny, bubbly snort of laughter.

Finally, dizzy and laughing, they tumbled out at the end of the tunnel and found the source of the problem.

A giant, ancient clam had fallen asleep with its massive mouth wide open, resting directly on top of the main current vent. Because it was right on the vent, every time it snored heavily, it blew the entire ocean current backwards.

"It's... " Clawdius said, staring in disbelief.

"A very, very loud sleeping clam," Coral noted, as the clam let out a gigantic snore that sent a fresh wave of backwards bubbles flying straight past them.

Coral looked around and had an idea. She found a large, incredibly soft piece of yellow sea sponge nearby. Swimming carefully, she approached the sleeping giant and gently placed the sponge under the clam's massive shell, making a perfect, squishy pillow.

The giant clam shifted its weight, smiled peacefully in its sleep, and slowly, gently closed its mouth, settling onto its comfortable new pillow.

Instantly, the current flipped back to normal.

The water flowed forward. Fish stopped swimming tail-first and darted ahead correctly. The jellyfish turned right-side up with a happy bloop. Somewhere in the distance, they could hear the hermit crab cheering as he finally walked into his shell.

"Well," Clawdius said, floating calmly and naturally for the first time all day.

"The silliest so far," Coral grinned, swimming forward perfectly. "Now, let's go get some breakfast kelp.

As the reef settled back into its peaceful rhythm, every creature agreed: sometimes the biggest and strangest problems have the silliest and simplest solutions—and that's perfectly fine.
